The North Yorkshire Moors Railway runs between Pickering and Grosmont, and over the Network Rail line from Grosmont to Whitby.
The 24 mile line was opened in 1836 and operated for over a century, closing to passengers in 1965, but in 1967 the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Preservation Society (NYMRPS) was formed (now the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust) working to raise funds and reopen the line in stages, until the line between Pickering and Grosmont was fully reopened in 1975.
The NYMR holds several events throughout the year, which are well worth photographing – particularly the Annual Steam Gala in September and the ‘Railway in Wartime’ event (in October), where there are numerous re-enactments, vehicles and displays from World War II.
